LibrePlanet 2012 D-1

Starting tomorrow I will be in Boston for the annual conference of the Free Software Foundation, « LibrePlanet 2012« . We’ll be four people from Quebec (actually 5, just got last minute confirmation of another former colleague!), wanting to learn about what has been been brewing abroad and also wanting to share about our experiences here in Quebec. The LibrePlanet teams structure offers a way for people in the same area to gather and share their love for Free Software – much like the LoCo Teams welcome Ubuntu users.

I’d like to thank my employer, Microcom, for supporting my participation in this event by releasing me from work for the next few days and providing a vehicle for transport. I would also like to highlight a special sponsorship from  Avencall, which will make possible blogging our participation and two presentations summarizing the event withing the next couple of weeks. Avencall is the company behind XiVO, an open source (GPLv3) unified communications system based on Asterisk for small, medium and large businesses. Comme j’ai écrit ces derniers jours, à partir de demain je serais à Boston pour la conférence annuelle de la Free Software Foundation, « LibrePlanet 2012« . J’emmène quatre autres libristes québécois avec moi (en fait 5, un ancien collègue vient de confirmer!), voulant en savoir plus sur ce qui se passe ailleurs en technologies libres mais aussi voulant partager nos expériences et activités ici au Québec. Les « LibrePlanet teams » offrent une structure semblable au LoCo Teams Ubuntu , où les gens peuvent se rassembler pour échanger sur leur passion – les logiciels et les technologies libres.

Je voudrais remercier mon employeur, Microcom, pour appuyer ma participation à cet événement en me libérant pour la durée de celui-ci et en fournissant un véhicule pour le transport. J’aimerais aussi souligner une commandite spéciale d’Avencall, qui rendra possible la rédaction de billets sur mon carnet pour documenter notre participation et deux présentations résumant nos activités d’ici quelques semaines. Gardez un oeil attentif sur l’Agenda du Libre du Québec!

Ubuntu in Haiti

If you’re in Haiti or know anyone near Grand-Goave please let me know, I am here for a week and I’ll be training a few teachers on a new lab we’re putting together thanks to a donation via Micro Recyc Coopération.

The training will focus on free software and its origins / advantages, using LibreOffice, the GNU/Linux desktop and installing Debian, Ubuntu and Trisquel. Oh, and making CAT5e cables 🙂 The goal is to have two full training days next week, Monday and Tuesday. Training is free and open to the public, but you need to contact me or add yourself to the wiki (see next paragraph).

I am also seeking help to work on the Ubuntu Haiti wiki. If you know any organizations using Ubuntu in Haiti, this would be a good time to add them there. I am susbcribed to it so I’ll get any updates as they happen.

Une belle heure Ubuntu à Outremont vendredi dernier!

Vendredi dernier, comme tous les vendredis, je suis allé au Bistro Araucaria pour l’Heure Ubuntu. Je m’y rends en bicyclette et tant qu’à rester chez moi les vendredi midi je viens au bistro et si des gens me rejoignent, tant mieux 🙂 J’ai eu une belle surprise, plusieurs membre d’Ubuntu QC ainsi que deux nouvelles personnes (dont un voisi du quartier) se sont joint à nous:

Nous avons discuté de tout et de rien, entre autres la sortie imminente de LibreOffice, sa compatibilité avec Antidote (Miche a promis de tester!), la nouvelle entreprise en consultation et logiciel libres que Sipherdee démarre bientôt (IdleOne aussi était intéressé de collaboré avec les services que nous offrons), mais surtout, nous avons savouré de délicieux mets chiliens (le Pastel de Choclo reste mon choix préféré) et rencontré les gens qu’on cottoie souvent sur le webchat IRC d’Ubuntu QC 🙂 J’ai vu deux nouveaux visages, Michel et Jack, qui ont bien aimé leur expérience – Jack voulait faire retirer Ubuntu de son laptop car il ne s’en servira pas mais il dit qu’il avait trouvé génial que ça « fermente » et ça « mijote » ainsi, toutes ces discussions animées ! Je crois qu’il va revenir 🙂

Cette heure Ubuntu s’est terminée à 15h30!!!

Formation : Initiation aux logiciels libres et à GNU/Linux (Montréal)

Dimanche prochain (30 janvier) de 14h à 16h je vais animer un atelier-formation sur les logiciels libres, plus particulièrement GNU/Linux (Ubuntu et Trisquel), Android, ainsi que quelques applications de bureautique comme LibreOffice.

Apprenez à utiliser, modifier, dupliquer et diffuser ces logiciels complètement gratuits. Une façon intelligente d’utiliser vos outils informatiques. Venez même avec vos ordinateurs portables si le coeur vous en dit. Ces ateliers/conférences se tiendront un dimanche par mois à partir du 30 janvier 2011.

Ce sera un survol rapide mais efficace, j’espère que chaque personne repartira avec des logiciels mais surtout avec une nouvelle ouverture d’esprit sur l’importance de contrôler la technologie plutôt que de se laisser contrôler par la celle-ci. Participer, plutôt que seulement consommer, c’est un choix parfois intéressant.

La Bibliothèque Mile-End a été Fondée en 1982 et est installée depuis 1992 dans la superbe ancienne église Church of the Ascension. Cette bibliothèque est rapidement devenue un endroit que je fréquente souvent avec mes enfants et ma femme chaque semaine.

Au rez-de-chaussée on y retrouve la section adultes, avec une section réservée à l’étude et aux ordinateurs portables. L’accès Internet sans-fil y est gratuit. En traversant un espace café on peut accéder aux escaliers ou à l’ascenseur (pratique pour les poussettes). Au sous-sol la section jeunesse abrite une partie réservée aux contes, des ordinateurs disponibles pour les enfants, des jeux en prêt et de confortables fauteuils où les parents peuvent rester près des petits. C’est assez intime!

Le personnel de la bibliothèque est très accueillant. En remarquant les nombreuses activités et cours qui y étaient offerts, j’ai proposé à la bibliothécaire Mme. Marie-Christine Lavallée une première activité en Octobre 2010 qui a eu un bon accueil. La salle de conférence au premier étage est spacieuse, bien équipée et confortable, idéale pour ce genre d’activités. J’ai aussi fait don de quelques livres – je me disais qu’il serait utile de proposer aux visiteurs de la bibliothèque des livres accompagnés de DVD avec les logiciels dont on parle.

J’espère avec le temps faire connaître aussi la suite bureautique LibreOffice, projet auquel je m’intéresse depuis quelques moist, pour éventuellement pouvoir proposer des formations de « traitements de textes » et non de « Microsoft Word », pourquoi pas. On verra 🙂

An invitation to join Ubuntu’s Q&A group on Shapado.com

This is an invitation to anyone interested in joining a multi-lingual, freely-licensed Ubuntu Q&A site to check http://ubuntu.shapado.com.

As a disclaimer I should mention that I work at Canonical as a senior support analyst for Ubuntu support (both desktop and server) and I also train other people to provide Ubuntu support. I am also the admin and creator of the Ubuntu group in Shapado (10 months ago). So I constantly switch my community and professional hats 🙂

I use the Answers system in Launchpad extensively (including its FAQ facility) but it lacks two big features:

  • Non-English language support – also known as « l10n » or « localization« . That would be Bug #81419.
  • A reputation / trust system

As you can see that bug report is in an odd deadlock. My interpretation of it is Answers and Launchpad itself were not planned from the beginning to be multilingual. It’s so big now that this can’t be done quickly or easily.

The reputation system or « making Launchpad more social » is a huge feature request too, perhaps traditionally out of scope for such technically-oriented online resources (at least in the traditional Free / Open Source communities). It’s also something I am missing from my daily interactions with customers when providing commercial support.

So when I learned about Shapado I found a nice tool that could complement my advocacy needs, and some more. How is it different than Launchpad’s Answers ? To me, it’s primarily the language support, but many other features are a bonus.

Regarding the recent proposal to have an Ubuntu community in Stack Exchange, see How does Shapado compare to StackExchange ?. I honestly don’t want to join yet another English-only site that runs on non-Free software that I can’t fix or translate myself. I can’t ask anyone around me to do that either. That proposal was forwarded to the LoCo Teams contacts mailing list, asking team contacts to forward it. I am sorry but as an Ubuntu Member and Ubuntu QC contact I won’t do that. I am sticking with my principles for now, and using any free, open source alternative I can get.
